Davielier Turner (00:00)
I just want to say that I wish more people would try to understand the importance of home ownership and growing wealth through home ownership. A lot of people have friends that been in bad situations and listen to them and will deter them from buying a home. But if people look at what’s happening in the world, the cost of everything, the cost of rent, I don’t see any recession come.and the rent didn’t go down.
Q Edmonds (01:56)
Hello everyone. Welcome to the real estate pros podcast. I am your host, Q Edmonds, and I am super excited to be here today. I’m excited about my guests. You’ve heard me say this before. My guests, have a way of right before we about to get started, they say something that just fires me up. And it’s like, this is no different. know, I believe I have a lot of synergy with this gentleman here. And I know he’s going to drop some gems on you guys because one thing he loves to do.He loves to educate. He loves to educate people in owning their own home, being their own landlord. And he got so many angles where he can attack it from investor, broker, flipper. So I’m just excited for you all to meet Mr. Davielier Turner. Mr. Davielier, how you doing today, sir?
Davielier Turner (02:48)
I’m doing great. Quenn, how you doing today? ⁓Q Edmonds (02:50)
ManI’m doing good friend doing good Man listen, I’m excited to have you here and listen so because you are the star of the show I just want to dive in I want you to tell the people what your main focus is these days I’m wondering I want you to tell them a little bit of an origin story of how you got into real estate if you’re okay with that You know, we love a hero’s journey and I’m even talking a little bit about your journey So I’m excited to hear about that and then tell it what markets you’re operating in
Davielier Turner (02:54)
man.Q Edmonds (03:18)
And so, man, the floor is yours,Davielier Turner (03:21)
Yeah, I’m Davielier Turner. I’m from Jersey City, New Jersey, licensed real estate broker, instructor, flipper, developer, author, ⁓ fragrancer. I got a lot of stuff going on, but ⁓ everything stems from the foundation of real estate. I will not be able to do any of that if it wasn’t for real estate. What got me into real estate was I had friends doing mortgages and I always tell a story and I used to do party promotions. So my friends used to be like, why don’t you try real estate? I think you’re pretty good at it.And I was like, you know what, let me try it. And they were sending me all of their clients. And then I was working for TD Waterhouse, actually an investment firm doing computer networking. But within the first six months of real estate, I made my pay, my whole year’s pay in real estate. And I knew I had the bet on me and go ahead and go for it. And it was time to step out and step on faith, step out on faith and do real estate. And I stayed with real estate. And that was in 2001. That’s when that happened. And I’m still here. I’m still growing. I’m still learning.
I’m still getting educated and educating. So real estate is in me.
Q Edmonds (04:25)
Man, I love it. I love it. Where does the education part come from? know, all the time, everybody don’t want to tell people their, you know, their, their knowledge all the time. know, people want to keep the secret sauce to themselves. So where does the idea of education, educating people, where does that come from?Davielier Turner (04:43)
Well, first of all, I’m not what you call a gatekeeper. If I learn it, I share it. Like, I believe people need to know about home ownership. So it’s my goal to educate people, teach them, walk them through it. I have a book on Amazon called Grab My Hand as I walk through the homeowner process. And that’s what I do. I don’t just teach and educate people. I teach them how to keep their home, maintain their home, and get to their next home. And I’m a forever learner.
So therefore, I’m going to keep learning and keep teaching because that’s where it comes from. I believe that every day something changes and I need to be ahead of it in this real estate game and stay on top of it to compete and to be stay successful in this real estate business.
Q Edmonds (06:11)
Man, I love it, man. I love it. I love you said, listen, I’m not a gatekeeper. opened up the door. went, listen, I’ll give you the knowledge for you to walk through the door just like I did. I absolutely love it. ⁓ I want to ask you this. I’m to ask you about strategies, right? So I’m going to ask you about some core business strategies that you use, but I also would love to know some core personal strategies that you use. And so, you know, I know, you know, people business-wise, they may talk about consistency or systems. And then personally, I know people talk about code.plunges or going to the gym, but I would love to know for you what powers you on a business side with strategies and on a personal side with strategies.
Davielier Turner (06:50)
Well, I’ma just be simple with me. ⁓ I’m a people’s person. So everything I do is networking. If I walk into the room, I introduce myself to the room. When I leave the room, I need at least 15 to 20 people to know Mr. Davielier Turner was in this room. And I’m gonna introduce myself. We’re gonna have a small conversation. I’ma give you a card. I’m not gonna beat you down too long. It depends on where we at, but I do have to let my presence be known.and I keep business cards on me. Sometimes I arrive at events early just to put them on the table so I don’t interfere with nobody and try to hold the conversation while we’re in the middle of an event. But I’ll sit them on the table, just let the people pick them up, put it in person, give me a call later. So that’s very important. I think networking is always the way. You always have to be personable and don’t be afraid to introduce yourself because a lot of people wait for people to speak to them. I’m not that type of person. I’m coming to speak to you.
You have something that I need and it’s something that I want. So I’m going to introduce myself so we can make some type of connection to build a rapport with each other.
Q Edmonds (07:54)
I love it, man. I love it. So it’s something to me that you are a connector. You like connecting with people. I tell people that’s my purpose is to connect and my passion is through storytelling. And so I love to connect people with people. I love to connect with people. And I like to use storytelling to do that. And so that’s why I see just so many different synergies between you and I. But I want to ask you this, as you was building, building your brand, writing books, you know, building to where your success you are now.Have you faced any adversity? And I ask that question, man, because, you know, show people the success, but there’s the journey to success, right? And so have you faced some of the adversities that you’ve just built?
Davielier Turner (08:35)
I’m gonna, I’m gonna tell you a story. So we go to storage and I faced a lot of adversity. I mean, when the market crash in 2008, I used to have this thing in my hand that I had to use my money for, for every house that I want to flip every month, every house that I want to buy. And then I started, and in 2008, I went broke.I got a part-time job at the furniture store actually because I actually I had to have bills to pay and I wasn’t too good to get out there and as a salesman first I’m a salesman yeah so I went out there hit that floor like it was so intentional and I needed the money it was a need the floor coming in number two and number three every week in that company because I needed the money but I say this because you know and later on life I learned that
Q Edmonds (09:12)
Sorry.Davielier Turner (09:23)
it’s always good to use other people’s assets if you have access to it. And I had to learn that. So now I’m not saying I want something to happen to anybody’s asset, but know I put me in a situation where I was literally broke. And I learned that, and that was a big learning experience for me. But my partner told me one thing, he said, we’ll get it back. And we got it back. I believe that my partner, that’s my partner, my real estate company, he got 36 years in the business. He said, we will get it back. And I said, you know what? You’re right. We will. And we did.
Q Edmonds (10:32)
Yeah, I love it, man. I love it. So thank you, man. Thank you for that story. always say thank you for the gift of your vulnerability, right? You know, I ask the question, but people can always give how much they want to give. And so I thank you for that because I think that shows a perspective again, that adversity is going to come. But I love your part and say we’re getting that. Like the only time you get stuck is when you give up. Yes. You know, like right now it’s just a detour. You know, it’s not the end of the road. Like everything’s not a road. Everything’s not a roadblock. It’s sometimes it’s just a decoy detour to get you around and figure out different ways to go at it another way. And so I appreciate you saying that, man. ⁓ I do want to ask you, what are your next real goals? Like, what are you looking to solve or scale next? Like what’s next for you?
Davielier Turner (11:22)
Well, next I’m real excited because I have an eight unit building with a storefront that we’re in the process of putting up. And I’m going to be honest, I’m nervous because, you know, this is my first big development of this sort. I’m used to fixing, flipping and stuff like that. And you know, it’s annoying, it’s annoying, but it’s a learning curve and a learning process. And I have some great developers that’s holding my hand as they take me through that real estate process. And it’s very exciting and nervous, but I’m…the injustice, injustice, the injustice, the the injustice,
Q Edmonds (11:58)
Yeah, man. Yeah. So this this is going to be another check on the box, man. You know, you just keep you just keep checking out boxes, man. And it goes to and I would love to know, man, like, where where does your motivation mindset come from? Because you didn’t even share with everybody everything that you’re doing. You you talk to me about some stuff backstage. So coming from a crash 2008, right? You know, bouncing back, you know, ⁓Right in the book. Now you got this eight unit. Where is that mindset to keep pushing and keep going forward and keep being innovative? Where does that come from?
Davielier Turner (12:37)
I’m gonna be honest, it came from my mother. ⁓ Growing up, my mother raised seven kids by herself and she worked three jobs at one time and never stopped. And now I’m so grateful now that I could give back to her because she lives in my house. so I’m just feeling great, but it came from her because she didn’t quit no matter what came, what was in her face, what was presented, she kept going. And I learned that from her and my grandmother too as well because you gotta keep going no matter what happens. And like now what I’m doing now, my image now is I’m just projecting my image so my grandkids could see that and understand that they can’t quit. They have to keep going and we’re going to make it happen together. So, you know, I’m just trying to push it down the line and just teach, teach kids, people, even adults, things that I’ve never learned. And if I could keep, keep pushing, paying it forward and pushing it, I’m going to keep pushing it. But I need my grandchildren to see that ⁓ we’re never going to stop. We never going to quit. we got loans. got
We can breathe, we can keep going. We on going.
Q Edmonds (13:39)
They say a wise man leaves an inheritance for his children’s children. Right. So you talked about your grandchildren, leaving them in a inheritance of a mindset that we can get to whatever we want to get to. We can get to it. Like whatever you want to do, you can do it. And leaving that legacy, an example from the look at you and say, yeah, yeah, if pop pop, grand pop, I don’t know what they call you, but they did it.Pop pop there you go. If pop pop did it we can do it too and that’s good. mean that’s that’s You know epigenetics is real, know what we passed now in our and our mind and our body now bloodline is real and so You just like you talked about your mother Passing it down to you you passing it down to your kids into your grandkids is a big thing And so I’m so glad to hear that you got that
that foresight, you know, I really see the innovation in you, from being non, it’s just some of the things that we talked about. And even just with your kids and your grandkids, that’s real innovation, you know, that’s real innovation even for your kids, grandkids.
Davielier Turner (14:45)
And even with that, my grandson is 12. And I told him last week, said, listen, I have a coffee company in their name, Mason and Meadow Coffee Company. And ⁓ that’s their name, Mason and Meadow. And what I do with all the profit that I make from it, it go into a custodial account that nobody could touch until they’re 18. So I told him he had to start learning next year to start working it because it’s for them. But I’m just trying to create a situation like nobody taught me, nobody gave me, and I would just want them to have a fair start in life, like a lot of people do with their kids and their children. So, you know, and that’s what’s important to me.
Q Edmonds (16:02)
Yeah, well, man, you’re a wise and good man, I love how you talk about relationships, and I want to pick your brain a little bit about relationships. hear the relationship, you know, with your grandkids, you know, talk about your mother, talk a little bit about your business partner. And so I would love to hear your perspective on relationship building. Is it important in business? Has it impacted you in business? How would you describe your relationship building in business?Davielier Turner (16:28)
I think it’s very important because a man is only as good as his word. So ⁓ I believe important relationships start with being truthful and honest with people. When people know they can rely on you, they can trust you, they can do stuff. I think it really takes the relationships to another level. That’s why I say one thing about me, I’m not a gatekeeper and I’m a person that like to be honest, straightforward. And even if you don’t like the answer I give you, I’m still gonna give it to you honest and straightforward because that’s who the person I am. I’m not gonna sugar coat it for no one,⁓ Relationships are very important, man, because you never know how far you could go with a relationship. And just being truthful and being yourself to a person is more important than anything else. Not trying to be nobody else, just be yourself at all times. That will take your relationship. People like genuine people, and people can read genuine people.
Q Edmonds (17:17)
That part, that part. ⁓ My wife and I, have a sand that we bought from Brene Brown and she says, clear is kind, unclear is unkind. So when I hear about you talking about being straightforward, the kindest thing I can be is crystal clear. It’s for you to know exactly what I mean, exactly what I say. And I think that’s the best part is like you said, being honest, being, authentic, showing up as your true self.not the representative, know, not, not, not the imposter, you know, that feels the way after two, two conversations. You like, who is this person? Like, no, just be honest, give, give the person the respect of deciding if they want to deal with you or not. They want to be a business partner with you or not. They want to be a friend with you or not. If they want just be, you know, associated with you or not, just be the true you, not to save a whole bunch of time and we’ll know, you know, right from jump who we are.
what we’re talking about. And so I absolutely love that man. Davielier is there anything that you want to say that we haven’t said? Like, is there any kind of words of inspiration, encouragement, education, like anything that you feel like, you know, people may benefit from hearing from you? I would love to hear that if you have it.
Davielier Turner (18:32)
I just want to say that I wish more people would try to understand the importance of home ownership and growing wealth through home ownership. A lot of people have friends that been in bad situations and listen to them and will deter them from buying a home. But if people look at what’s happening in the world, the cost of everything, the cost of rent, I don’t see any recession come.and the rent didn’t go down.
I don’t see the prices change, the rent didn’t go down. I don’t see a lot of things and tragedies happen, COVID happened, the rent didn’t go down. So I want people to understand home ownership is important because the rent is never going down. you could control your situation or you can let someone else control it. mean, but it’s very important for us to understand the importance of home ownership. And if they look around the world and see what’s really happened,
⁓ Black Rock, certain companies, they’re creating a nation of renters right under our nose, or we’re not paying attention. And if we don’t get in now, we might not be able to get in later. Look at the foreclosures. There is not as many foreclosures coming on the market because Chase’s fixes up their own foreclosures now and written them out as well. So we better pay attention to the global market and see what’s going on and become homeowners because this might be our last chance.
Q Edmonds (19:50)
What a powerful, powerful message that that really hit, know, you know, you’re in Jersey. I’m in Baltimore. Baltimore is a booming market right now. People from all over the place is buying stuff in Baltimore. And you’re right. You know, educating people on home ownership. And I love how you said, like, pay attention what’s going on because this may be a large chance. Like, you know, they change in wholesale laws. They change in all kinds of different things. Right. LikeIt’s 50 year mortgage about to come on. Like there’s strategies behind what’s going on. if you make sure I say this in PPC, but if you follow history, know, sometimes certain people get blocked out of certain situations. And so you got to take advantage of the stuff why I say it now. So I definitely hear you for sure, sir. For sure.
Listen, this has been great. If someone wanted to reach out to you, connect with you, learn more about what you’re doing, how can people get in contact with you,
